Decodables

Decodables for middle school level can be a major challenge. Teenagers are hyperaware of anything that seems babyish. Decodables have an important, if short, role in giving students success in reading the phonological patterns that they have mastered. Being able to read connected text gives them confidence to continue in their reading journeys. As such, finding relevant decodables that consider the identity issues and themes of teenage life is important. There are different options available, including the Teen and Adult Phonics Books (TAP). Teachers and librarians can also write their own, though this is of course more labour intensive. Here is an example of a teen phonics lesson using decodables.
